Brighton A stayed top of Division One with an impressive win away at defending champions Redhill A, in a fixture they traditional struggle in. The first three games went with the break with Geoff Jukes for the hosts and Jim Millward and Rob Hall for the visitors securing good wins. The fourth leg proved vital with Phil Osborne winning a war of attrition against Dave Jones, and despite Dave Constable pulling a leg back, Nigel Senior went off with 7k in the sixth and although this gave Gary Powell a slight chance it wasn’t taken. Matt Knight made it a 5-2 win by taking the last.
After having their first game postponed Worthing A started their season with a win away at Tunbridge Wells. Stuart Mepham had a great comeback win in the first against Pete Sainsbury in a leg where both players had only one visit to the table. Martin Smith and Joe Oakley, with a 10k and touch, made it 3-0 before Richard Corbould kept the match alive killing the leg off first visit. Kevin Tunstall sealed the match in the fifth but not without drama after pegging his opening break, Paul Sainsbury made 7,550 but just left KT enough time to catch. Mike Daw and Curt Driver, with another 10k and touch, won the last two to make it 5-2 to the away side.
Brighton B won their first game since their return to the top division with a home victory against West Sussex. Jack Baden won the first with the break before the next four games went against with Sandra Hall narrowly beating Alan Hitchman, Michelle Baden getting a good win against Chris Cox, Jim Greensted having a rare bad game at home being beaten by Martin Cole and Marcus Chipman beating Trevor Tucker. The last two legs went with the break and wins for Kevin Charlton for West Sussex and Alan Brackenridge for Brighton B.
In Division Two Horsham moved top with a 6-1 win over Littlehampton. Dick Cable won the first before Gareth Lloyd got a 10k break at the second time of asking after his opponent missed early. Littlehampton captain Colin Green also missed early and was beaten by a steady game form Brian Marten before Horsham put on Stuart Carruthers to try and seal the win which he duly did with a 10k and touch to give James Whittle no chance. Ricky Dewdney marked his return to the Horsham team by becoming the third player to get a 10k break after John Dynes missed early. Steve Beach got Littlehampton’s point and in the last Horsham’s Malcolm Andre recorded his first Inter League win with a good win against SCBBA President Dave Hampton.
Redhill B versus Worthing B was postponed.
Mid Sussex stayed top of Division Three and maintained their 100% record with a 4-3 home win against Brighton C. Andy Farmer-Wright got the home side and Steve Hurley responded for the visitors with the top score of the evening of 9,150. The third leg proved vital with Geoff Fairs beating Moppy Scott against the break. The remaining legs all went with the break with wins for Derek Taylor (Mid Sussex), Brian Muggeridge (Brighton C), Darren Robins (Brighton C) and Ros Appleby (Mid Sussex B).
Hastings versus Lewes was postponed.
