A Tunbridge Wells win at home to Redhill A would have given them the title, but they got off to a bad start when Tony Cross beat Richard Corbould against the break. Geoff Jukes and Dave Jones then put the visitors 3-0 up; putting Redhill in with a shout of getting the six legs they needed to finish second above the Kent side.
Ian Wright went off with enough in the fourth for Tunbridge Wells but the fightback was short lived as Gary Powell gave Redhill the win in the fifth and Colin Robbins added another leg in the sixth.
This meant the runners-up spot would be decided in the last leg in which Tunbridge Well’s Curt Driver gave Dave Constable an early chance but then made no mistake second time.
