February saw one series of Inter League fixtures and one rearranged game.
Series Eight was played on 6th February and started with two contenders for the Division One title meeting at Jim Millward’s pub the Stags Head when Brighton hosted Tunbridge Wells.
On what is becoming increasingly common on that table the first four games were won on the opening visit with Bob Hall and Matthew Knight for the hosts and Curt Driver and Gerry Fitzjohn for the visitors each getting 10k. The last three legs then all went against the break with Jim Millward and Chris Tupper getting the important legs against to give Brighton the win before Paul Sainsbury beat Nigel Senior in the last.
The other match in Division One saw Brighton B run out surprising 5-2 winners against Worthing A. Alan Brackenridge won the first for Brighton B before Joe Oakley levelled with match with 15k and the top score of the night. The key leg came in the third when Jean Brackenridge took advantage of Martin Smith pegging to put Brighton in a strong position. Jim Greensted went off with enough against KT in the fourth and Michelle Baden won the match in the fifth. The last two legs went with the breaks with wins for Stuart Mepham and Stuart Carruthers.
In Division Two Littlehampton stayed top and kept on their winning ways with a 5-2 victory against Mid Sussex. In a match that was reversed from the original fixture list the visitors raced into an early lead with Bill Harrison winning a low scoring first against the break and Steve Hurley and Chris Lawman winning with the break. Ros Appleby kept the match alive for Mid Sussex but only for one leg as Colin Green won the fifth to get the victory for Littlehampton. Dave Hampton and Derek Taylor both won to end the night.
Worthing B edged a close game at Lewes by a score of 4-3. Paul Barnett won the first against the break, but Lewes fought back with Chase Newman also winning against. Worthing B then won the next three with Tony Jenner, Rick Cunningham and Ben Goodwin all doing enough before Jan Bithell and Dave Knight won the last two legs for Lewes.
On Sunday 20th February a rearranged game from Series Three was played with Worthing A looking to get revenge against Brighton B.
The evening started with the first five games going with the break with Lorin Clough and Stuart Mepham for Worthing A and Stuart Carruthers, Jim Greensted (who both opened with enough) and Alan Brackenridge all getting the wins. The key legs came at the end when Martin Smith caught Jean Brackenridge on the last ball to edge last six and then Alan Mepham getting a good break near the end to win the decider and give the hosts a 4-3 victory.
