Jean Brackenridge finished runner-up in AEBBA Singles while representing Sussex at the Totteridge Club on Sunday 30th October.
The competition was extraordinary as the 5 ladies played out what was surely the closest competition ever in this event. Going into the last series Pauline Withey (Oxon) was finished on 2 wins. Dawn Jordan (Bucks) and Janet Burns (Berks) also had 2 wins but had to play Jean Brackenridge and Denise Wills (Surrey) respectively. Denise got 9k up on Janet on tricky table 6, Janet faught back with a 6k score, but Denise got her vital 2nd win. The other game saw Dawn build up a 5k lead against the break putting her favourite to retain the title, but as Jean does she found a way to came back to win the 2nd leg and the match but would it be enough on score?
When it was added up just 11,730 points separated ALL FIVE ladies. In the end just 1,730 points was between the winner and runner up….and it was Denise (39,580) who pipped Jean (37,850) to take this title for the 4th time.
In the Men’s event held at the same time Sussex were represented by Nigel Senior after original entrant Jim Millward had to withdraw due to injury. Nigel finished fourth out of the field of six, level on points with Mark Trafford (Oxon) and Curt Driver (Kent) in second and third but losing out of aggregate score. The event was won by Matt Jones of Bucks.
