The Sussex Singles were won by multiple champions Jim Millward and Jean Brackenridge when they were played on Sunday 3rd April at the Burgess Hill Constitutional Club.
Jim was winning the Men’s event for the 5th time, putting him equal with Terry Race in second in the All-Time Winners List. There were rumours that Jim would not be turning up due to illness, but he showed no effects of it during the day in putting in a superb performance.
He beat Nigel Senior in a close Final in which both players struggled to get to grips with the table. Mark James and Stuart Mepham were the losing semi-finalists while the Plate was won by Dave Ingram who beat Stuart Carruthers in the Final.
Jean was winning the Ladies’ event for the 17th time!!! The five ladies played a robin round group and going into the last round of fixtures both Jean and Jan Bithell were unbeaten with three wins from three. It was therefore decided that rather than having a separate final the last group game, which was between the two, would act as the Final. Jan took a lead into the second leg but a good break from Jean gave her the victory.
