Stuart Mepham beat defending champion Matthew Knight to win the fifth Sussex Off The Spot, which was played at the Burgess Hill Constitutional Club on Saturday 27th July. Stuart had a lead of 11k after getting the balls back regularly in the first leg and Matt was unable to eat into deficit during his break leg.
With a format of 4 groups of 6, Stuart played well all day and topped Group A winning all five games before beating Chris Tupper in the quarter-finals. Things got tougher in the semi-final but Stuart took his chance well after namesake Stuart Carruthers pegged a 9k break.
Matt gave a valiant defence of the title and despite a slow start in his group he topped Group B with four wins. Again he struggled slightly in his quarter-final but hit top form in the semi-final with a comeback win against Ian Lelliott with the highest break of the day 11,800 in the second leg.
Nigel Senior was surprising knocked out in the group stages but avenged an earlier defeat by Alan Brackenridge to win the plate in a tight final.
