Sussex A won the County Championship title for a third time in a row with a commanding victory when Division One was held on Sunday 11th September at Totteridge Community Club.
Five teams played in an all played all event and for a second year Sussex A were commanding winners despite being pushed hard by Sussex B who again finished runners-up.
With each match consisting of the seven players playing two individual legs against the same opponent, Sussex A won 35 points to finish five points ahead of their B team, who were a further four points ahead of Kent.
Both Sussex team started strongly with the A team beating Oxon A 10-4 and the B team beating Kent 8-6. The A team had a bye in the second series but the B team couldn’t take advantage as they lost 9-5 to Bucks.
In the third series the two Sussex teams faced off and it was the B team who came away with the win. All games except one finished 1-1 but Chris Cox took advantage of a miss by Kevin Tunstall in the second leg to take both points.
With all now still to play for Sussex A beat Bucks 9-5 and Sussex B beat Oxon A by the same score, however other scores meant that although they were leading Sussex B could not win the title heading into their bye in the last series.
This left the A team needing just 6 legs to secure the win and they achieved this with a 10-4 win against Kent; the winning margin also assuring the B team of runners-up.
Nobody won all 8 legs but Stuart Mepham, playing for Sussex B, topped the individual averages with 7 legs won and an average of 8,519.
The winning Sussex A team was:
Kevin Tunstall (captain), Dave Ingram, Joe Oakley, Martin Cole, Matthew Knight, Nigel Senior and Phil Osborne
