Sussex A defended their County Championship title from 2019 when the event returned in 2021 following the missed event last year.
With Bar Billiards events starting to return following COVID-19 restrictions the County Championship Division One were held at the Totteridge Community Club on Sunday 12th September.
Five teams were present on the day and Sussex A came away with the victory and were followed home by Sussex B to complete the first time one County has ever taken the top two positions in the history of the event.
With each match consisting of the seven players playing two individual legs against the same opponent, Sussex A amassed 40 points from three wins and one draw to finish six points clear of their B team.
Both Sussex teams opened the day strongly with both getting 12-2 wins with the A’s beating Oxon A and the B’s impressing against Northants. The B’s took advantage of the A team having a bye in the second series to take the lead with a 8-6 against Oxon A.
The third series saw the A’s narrow the gap with a with an 8-6 win against Northants while the B team lost to Bucks A by the same score. However it was in the fourth series with the B team sitting out that the damage was done with the A’s storming to a 13-1 win against Bucks A.
The last series saw the two Sussex teams and the A’s secured the needed legs in the first half of the series before the B’s battled back to claim a draw in the match.
Kevin Tunstall and Nigel Senior both won all 8 legs for Sussex A and Dave Ingram did likewise for Sussex B and also claimed the highest break of the day with 14,670 in the last leg.
The winning Sussex A team was:
Kevin Tunstall (captain), Ian Lelliott, Joe Oakley, Martin Cole, Matthew Knight, Nigel Senior and Phil Osborne.
